The Position

Are you a skilled Tractor Trailer driver? Are you looking for reliable and consistent LOCAL work? The City of Portland is seeking an Automotive Equipment Operator II- Tractor Trailer to join the Bureau of Environmental Services!

The City of Portland Bureau of Environmental Services (BES) is seeking an Automotive Equipment Operator II (AEO) II within the Operations Division that is an essential employee critical to the success of the Tryon Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant (TCWTP) facility. The AEO II hauls away all solids generated at TCWTP to the Columbia Boulevard Wastewater Treatment Plant (CBWTP). This includes the loading/unloading of waste to/from a tanker at the wastewater treatment plant facilities as well as providing hauling support to pump stations and other treatment plant systems as needed.

The typical AEO II schedule requires driving 5 days a week (Monday - Friday) but in order to meet the dynamic workload, overtime is often required.

The position interacts with their direct Supervisor and Wastewater Operators at the TCWTP & CBWTP facilities.

To Qualify

The Following Minimum Qualifications are REQUIRED for this position

  1. Experience operating tractor-trailer, tractor-tanker, and/or similar large trucks on city streets and/or highways in a safe and efficient manner.
  2. Ability to perform routine maintenance on tractor-trailer/tanker/dump truck or other large trucks, including pre and post trip inspections.
  3. Ability to maneuver large tractor-trailer on narrow streets, arterials, moving around objects and backing without causing damage.
  4. Ability to work effectively with supervisors, co-workers and the public, often in difficult circumstances.
  5. Ability to analyze job location and determine most efficient and safest route into and out.

Applicants must also possess:

  • A valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License and acceptable driving record at the time of hire.
  • No restrictions on CDL specifically preventing the candidate from utilizing a 5th wheel.

The Recruitment Process

The recruitment process will consist of a minimum qualification review based off of your resume submitted and the answers to the supplemental questions.

Those who pass the minimum qualification review will be invited to a Work Skills Demonstration where they will operator a tractor trailer. Candidates will be scheduled and sent notices as to the time, date and location to test via an email. Testing is tentatively scheduled the week of November 1st. Those candidates passing the written test will be placed on a ranked eli g ible list that will be forwarded to the hiring authorities for employment consideration.

You have 14 days from the notice of the examination results to let us know if you disagree with your results. Please read the City of Portland Administrative Rule 3.01 for complete information. Additional evaluation may be required prior to establishment of the eligible list and/or final selection.

Phase I: Supplemental Questionnaire
The online application process will include a pass / fail minimum qualification evaluation of a supplemental questionnaire and resume.
Applicants must pass the supplemental questionnaire will be invited to participate in the Work Skills Demonstration.

Phase II: Ranked Work Skills Demonstration
Applicants who successfully pass Phase I of the recruitment process will be scheduled for Phase II, a driving work skills demonstration that will result in a ranked list. Invitations will be sent via email, out-of-town applicants will be required to attend this phase in person to take this portion. Detail will be in the email invitation you receive.

A photo ID and your NEOGOV number (noted on your email invitation) will be required for admittance to the test.
