Your skills in therapeutic play and concern for others will help to promote the emotional and mental well-being of our pediatric patients.


Child Life Specialists provide general social and emotional support to pediatric patients and their families during their inpatient hospital stay. Specifically trained in the developmental needs of infants - adolescents, Child Life Specialists provide on-going opportunities for play, diversional activities, self-expression, and interaction with other hospitalized patients. Through the specific use of medical play, patients are pre-operatively prepared for surgery and are offered procedural support for tests and medical procedures. Program goals are to provide positive, developmentally supportive experiences, which assist patients in reducing fear and anxiety associated with hospitalization. Child Life Specialists are also involved in training Child Life Interns, pediatric volunteers, and nursing staff in the social, emotional, and cognitive needs of pediatric patients.


Education: Bachelor's Degree in Child Development or a related field required.

Experience: Child Life Internship (600 hours) or previous employment as a Child Life Specialist for a minimum of 600 hours is required. Previous work/volunteer experience with children (0-21 years) in non-medical settings helpful, i.e. schools, early intervention, day care, youth camps, adolescent programs, etc.

This Child Life Specialist is responsible for supporting patients in the Children's Emergency Department and throughout Randall Chilren's Hospital during the evening hours and on the weekends.

Demonstrates skill to provide:

  • Observational assessment and interaction with patients and families using the theories of human growth and development, therapeutic play, and emotionally supportive interventions with families under stress.
  • Therapeutic play and activities for individuals and groups 0-21 years.
  • Emotionally supportive play and preparation for pediatric patients undergoing surgery, medical tests and procedures.
  • Families with information regarding their children's understanding of illness.
  • A professional standard of care which includes addressing of psychosocial issues to patient, families and pediatric health care team, i.e. child life assessment and plan of care.
  • Supervisory skills preferred.
  • Keyboard skills and ability to navigate electronic systems applicable to job functions.
